There is a lot to be considered when energising a new build, it’s no longer just power, lighting, aerials, phones and a possible door bell. The Oxford Electrical Company are experienced new build electrical contractors and understand that new homes will require a more complex system to support security systems, loft and basement circuits, lighting design, high-tech networks, smoke detector systems, special zone settings, external lighting and power and other demands that may require building control approval.

Testing and Certificates

We will not only design, plan and install electrical systems for new builds but have the appropriate qualifications, knowledge and experience to carry out the inspections and testing procedures according to BS 7671 and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate.

With sufficient planning you can also go some way to future-proof your new home by running CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling alongside the main wiring ready for smart home technology to save the costs of retro-fitting in the future.

Planning and Installation

The Oxford Electrical Company will design a safe electrical system that will include all your power and technological requirements and comply with regulations, following the technical rules laid out in BS 7671. There are many factors to consider such as the number of rooms and the required lighting, sockets, TV and telephone points in all these rooms. The more specific requirements for individual rooms such as underfloor heating, cookers and white goods and any larger electrical requirements like renewable energy systems.

All these factors will impact on backbox locations and cable specification but also on the choice of consumer unit, formerly called the fuse box.

Collaborative Working

We work very closely with other trades on site, especially with new builds, communicating on project timings and installs to help the project run as smoothly as possible. First fix electrics is all about preparation; installing a temporary consumer unit and running carcass wiring and fitting backboxes and ensuring everything is fitted according to IEE wiring regulations that require cables buried in walls either vertically or horizontally from outlets, within a 150mm tolerance. Everything is done in anticipation of the needs/requirements of the following trades.

Once plastering is complete the second fix wires up and fixes all the visible items, such as light fittings, security systems, faceplates and cooking equipment. The Oxford Electrical Company will then also install a permanent consumer unit and test the system including the firing and testing of the boiler.
